Cleaning tips

Keeping your home clean between visits

A professional cleaning resets a home. What happens over the following weeks is what decides whether the next visit starts from a good place or from scratch. None of this requires much time, but it does require doing it consistently rather than perfectly.

The fifteen minutes that matter most

Most of what makes a home look neglected is not dirt. It is objects that are not where they belong. A short reset at the end of the day, done consistently, does more for how a home feels than an hour of scrubbing on a Saturday.

Pick a time that already exists in your routine, such as after dinner, and stop when the timer ends. The point is repetition, not completeness.

  • Clear flat surfaces: counters, the dining table, the coffee table
  • Return items to the room they belong in
  • Run the dishwasher or wash what is in the sink
  • Take out the trash when the bag is full, not when it overflows

Clean where the buildup starts

Buildup is much easier to remove in its first hours than in its second month. A cooktop wiped while it is still warm takes seconds. The same cooktop three weeks later needs a scraper and patience.

The same logic applies to shower walls, the inside of the microwave, and spills in the refrigerator. Handling them immediately is not extra work, it is much less work moved earlier.

Contain what comes in from outside

A large share of the dirt in a home walks in through the door. Mats at the entrance, a designated place for shoes, and a spot for bags and coats stop that dirt before it reaches the rest of the house.

If you have pets, brushing them regularly removes hair at the source, before it spreads through the rest of the house.

Tell your cleaner what changed

If something happened between visits, mention it. A spill that dried, a room that got heavy use, a guest stay, an appliance that started leaking. That information changes what the visit prioritizes.

Cleaning goes better as a conversation than as a guessing game. The more that is known about the space beforehand, the better the time in it is spent.

None of this replaces a professional visit. It makes each one start further ahead, so the time is spent on real cleaning rather than on catching up.
